Boffa Miskell welcomes Canopy Design

15 June 2022

The award-winning landscape architecture and landscape planning company, located in Nelson and Christchurch, will integrate into Boffa Miskell's inter-disciplinary design practice.

Boffa Miskell chief executive Kerry Gupwell says, “We’ve consistently worked in the Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough region, and it’s clear that Canopy shares our values and vision for New Zealand’s places and spaces. Their established team within the design space helps broaden our capacity and capabilities.

“A local presence enables us to get a deeper understanding of the people and place; and ultimately, bringing Canopy into Boffa Miskell whānau enhances both the quantity and quality of project work and outcomes for everyone.”

For Canopy’s Liz Gavin and Luke Porter, the opportunity to work on projects across the country, and at a greater scale and complexity, is an exciting prospect.

“Being able to call on the specialist disciplines at Boffa Miskell – Technical Services, Ecology and Cultural Advisory, for example – to support the creative design process is something to look forward to,” says Canopy director Luke Porter. “It expands what we can offer our long-standing clients, and also increases the variety of work our designers can get involved with.”

Canopy’s Nelson office will retain its physical space; and, along with continuing his leadership role on projects in Wellington and nationally, Boffa Miskell partner Marc Baily will be working out of Nelson several days a week.

Canopy director Liz Gavin says commonalities with Boffa Miskell’s ethos made the decision to focus on project work, and transition away from being business owners, easier.

“The reputation and relationships both Canopy and Boffa Miskell have built with our clients, peers and communities are something that each of us respect, and it’s something we’ve got in common,” says Liz. “That alignment of values and aspirations for environment makes this decision to join together a good fit for both practices.”
