Profile

Boyden has worked in environmental planning and design for 30 years. He is an experienced landscape planner and project manager, responsible for supervising development projects, land use and resource management studies, land rehabilitation and design projects for public, corporate and private clients throughout New Zealand. He is also an experienced expert witness, presenting evidence to council and Environment Court hearings.

Before joining Boffa Miskell in 1986, Boyden worked mainly in conservation and landscape protection, reserve and open space planning and management - areas in which he continues to specialise. While working for the Queen Elizabeth II National Trust, he also developed public education programmes about revegetation and landscape management. These skills have more recently evolved into public consultation aspects of projects.

Boyden’s involvement as author and editor of several publications, including the landmark Revegetation Manual in 1983, led to the establishment of Landscape Publications, a subsidiary company of Boffa Miskell.

Expertise

Landscape assessment and planning

Evaluating landscape character and quality for regions, districts or projects. Preparation of assessment of effects (AEE) for resource consent applications. Advising on objectives and policies for the ongoing management of the landscape.

Management plans

Prescribing long term management policies and programmes for parks, reserves, river catchments and special resource areas such as sensitive and protected landscapes, heritage sites and conservation areas.

Land rehabilitation

Developing restoration programmes for land disturbed by activities such as major developments, landfills or mineral extraction.

Open space planning and development

Concept planning and design of parks and open spaces in both rural and urban areas for recreational and other uses.

Master planning

Integrated planning and design of major projects from initial briefing and project definition, feasibility and site studies, through to concept development and cost planning.

Project management

Co-ordinating the input of different technical disciplines and managing project development for complex design and planning projects. Extensive public consultation is often involved.

Utilities planning

Providing environmental planning to ensure that utilities successfully integrate with their natural and physical contexts.

Education/interpretation

Preparing information/ interpretation plans and publications. Designing on-site facilities for public education, including displays.
