Profile
John has 15 years' experience in environmental planning, district planning, urban and landscape design projects throughout the upper North Island of New Zealand. He is frequently sought for complex multi-disciplinary projects, either as project leader or as a team member. John has been a director of Boffa Miskell since 1990.
As an environmental planner he carries out assessments of environmental effects, and advises on the development of large-scale projects from the perspectives of land use, resource management, design and visual effects. He is an experienced expert witness, providing expert evidence before council hearings and the Environment Court.
His landscape design work includes rehabilitation of land disturbed by development, rural design and large commercial developments. His urban design work includes numerous town centre, waterfront and streetscape projects with extensive involvement in project management and community consultation.
Expertise
Assessment of effects on the environment
Evaluating landscape and visual effects of projects and advising on mitigation as the basis for site/route selection, development planning and obtaining resource consents.
Landscape assessment and planning
Evaluating landscape character and quality for regions, districts or developments. Advising on objectives and policies for the ongoing management of the landscape. Preparing structure plans for catchments to enable further subdivision and manage the landscape effects of additional development.
Land rehabilitation
Developing restoration programmes for land disturbed by activities and major developments such as landfills, mineral extraction, wastewater treatment plants and stormwater ponds.
Project management
Co-ordinating the input of different technical disciplines and managing project development for complex design and planning projects. Extensive public consultation is often involved.
Master planning
Integrating project management and design from inception to completion including feasibility studies, site selection, design, project planning, supervision of consultants, contract management and implementation.
Urban design
Designing public open space in urban environments to provide stimulating, attractive and functional places for people - city centres, streets and plazas, waterfronts, shopping centres, community housing. Evaluating community views, pedestrian movement, built form, traffic and parking.
Management plans
Prescribing long term management policies and programmes for parks, reserves, river catchments and special resource areas such as sensitive and protected landscapes, heritage sites and conservation areas.
Public consultation
Meeting with communities, interest groups and stakeholders to facilitate discussion and positive outcomes through design and conflict resolution.
