Profile

John joined the Auckland office of Boffa Miskell in 2001 after moving from the United Kingdom, where he had gained 12 years' experience as a landscape architect working in both public and private sectors. He is a company principal, leads the Auckland landscape architecture team and is responsible for project management of landscape design projects.

In recent years John has worked extensively with Auckland City on a range of urban, main street, CBD streetscape and reserve improvement/ upgrade projects involving community and key stakeholder participation. He has also project-managed the design and implementation of landscape schemes associated with commercial office developments, private and public sector residential developments, and educational institutions.

John's extensive experience includes design, project management and implementation of a wide range of projects including large scale commercial, retail, healthcare, urban improvement and residential schemes. He is accustomed to working collaboratively with other professionals in multidisciplinary teams. John's expertise in a variety of project procurement processes includes traditional contract, 'design and build' and partnership frameworks.

Expertise

Urban design

Designing public open space in urban environments to provide stimulating, attractive and functional places for people - city centres, streets and plazas, water fronts, shopping centres, community housing. Evaluating community views, pedestrian movement, built form, traffic and parking.

Landscape design

Site analysis, concept design, masterplan design, construction detailing and contract documentation. Supervision of physical implementation of projects.

Assessment of the environment

Evaluating landscape and visual effects of projects and advising on mitigation measures.

Project management

Co-ordinating the input of different technical disciplines and managing project development for complex design and planning projects. Extensive public consultation is often involved.

Master planning

Integrating project management and design from inception to completion including feasibility studies, site selection, design, project planning, supervision of consultants, contract management and implementation.

Public consultation and participation

Meeting with communities, interest groups and stakeholders to facilitate discussion and positive outcomes through design and conflict resolution.
