Bush City - Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Combining interpretation, exhibition, performance with informal public use

Working with Te Papa, the Boffa Miskell design team developed concept proposals illustrating opportunities for Te Papa to better address its external environment 10 years after opening — for the next 10 years. The proposals build on the concept of Te Papa as a vessel and include a series of interventions and additions that will not only allow better resolution of how people move around and arrive at Te Papa, but provide opportunities for external exhibit and education space. These include new movement routes — gathering and meeting places — a pacific winter garden — and an external language of materials and furniture strengthening the definition of the Te Papa precinct.

Boffa Miskell was a member of the consultant design team that planned and designed the external spaces at Te Papa, and was specifically responsible for the landscape design concepts, planting design and supervision of landscape softworks. Four outdoor spaces - Bush City, Marae Approach, Outdoor Exhibitions Area and the Urban Plaza - were provided for interpretation, exhibition, performance and informal public use. the New Zealand creation story was brought out in the design of the 2.1 hectare site, through themes of land formation, ecology and biculturalism. Bush City, the main outdoor interpretation area, earned a 2006 NZILA silver landscape design award.
