Nicole Tune has won the Boffa Miskell scholarship for Meritorious Achievement in Third Year Landscape Architecture.
At the end of 2018, as second-year students, Nicole and her classmates were asked to develop playground design concepts for Ararira Springs Primary School. The school asked for designs that could be temporary, were made from recyclable materials, and reflected the school’s culture. Their completed concepts were reviewed by the school and the local community to decide on a final design. The chosen design was comprised of different elements from several students’ work.
Subsequently, the students were required to figure out how to construct the designs, to source and budget materials, and to project-manage the construction. The project encouraged the students include the school children in appropriate parts of the project.
Design leader for the Christchurch office, Nik Kneale says, “Nicole’s presentation clearly demonstrated an understanding of the context in which her projects sit. The cycleways project worked from a city-wide scale down to a specific area, which she was clearly familiar with; and her design solution looked to communicate upcoming features and hazards to cyclists through environmental design rather than regulatory signage; which is a landscape approach rather than an engineering response; and I would encourage her to keep developing her design solutions beyond the obvious.
“I enjoyed hearing about Nicole’s journey through the Ararira playground design process, from concept through to construction. Application of reflected learnings is key to continued development as a Landscape Architect and it was great to hear her discuss how her experience through the detailed design and construction phases might influence her approach to concept design in the future.”
Nicole says being awarded the Boffa Miskell Scholarship comes as a vote of confidence in my abilities as a landscape architect.
“I believe the Boffa Miskell Scholarship will enhance my learning as I continue into my final year at Lincoln, connecting me with professionals that have valuable experience. I am grateful to have the support of Boffa Miskell and Lincoln University at the beginning of my journey towards becoming a graduate landscape architect.”
