Ballantyne Road Masterplan begins

30 June 2022

The community can drop-in to information sessions this weekend and contribute their thoughts to the plan.

The Upper Clutha district is experiencing sustained and rapid growth, which puts pressure on access to sport, recreation and community facilities. As the Wānaka area changes, so too do the needs of the community.

The recently rezoned land at 101 Ballantyne Road provides an opportunity to build a multi-use green space in the Wānaka area to support the changing and future needs of the growing community.

QLDC have engaged Boffa Miskell, along with project partners, to develop a Masterplan for the site, setting a clear path for the development of sport, recreation and open space facilities for the next 20 years, to complement existing facilities in the area.

This weekend, community drop-in sessions are happening:

Saturday 2 July – Wanaka recreation Centre 10am -1pm
Sunday 3 July – Three Parks New World 10am -1pm

Boffa Miskell landscape architect Megan Harshey said she was looking forward to working with the community to gather feedback.

“Our goal is to develop a masterplan that can improve the site and enable it to grow with the community, providing further opportunities for sport, recreation and other open space activities in the Upper Clutha for future years,” she said.

Key objectives of the masterplan include:

Consider the Site over a 20 year period and the need to allow for future uses, changes in use and future proofing in terms of space allocation;

Provide a balance between organised sports / recreation use and major events, and the provision of space and facilities for informal recreation.

To cater for the “whole of the community” in providing recreation and leisure opportunities for all, with associated amenities.

Physical connection to other community facilities needs consideration as does linkage with commercial/retail and surrounding residential developments via walking and cycling routes

Project partners include: Global Leisure Group, 106 Architects, Kauati and Holmes Consulting
