Dr Helen Nathan earns Certified Environmental Practitioner (CEnvP)

24 March 2026

Dr Helen Nathan has successfully achieved her CEnvP after meeting the criteria for training, experience, professional conduct and ethical behaviour.

Helen has a strong academic background in general ecology and conservation, and earned her doctorate at the University of Auckland. During her time there, she was able to contribute to the successful eradication of mammalian pests from Antipodes Island. In her professional career she has specialised in invasive species behaviour and management.

Prior to joining Boffa Miskell's Whangarei office in 2023, Helen spent six years In Wellington working as a Predator Ecologist, and later as Science Team Manager. In these roles, Helen led the design of industry-leading landscape-scale predator detection networks and incursion responses. She was also responsible for the detailed analysis of field data to track target population trends over time and space and measure the impact of management interventions.

At Boffa Miskell, Helen has continued her involvement in mammalian pest management. She designed an online survey for the Predator Free 2050 community which aimed to record a snapshot of the current way in which Predator Free groups record and use data, as well as their aspirations for data sharing at a national scale, and recommendations for further development of a nationwide Predator Free Data Strategy and Model.

The Certified Environmental Practitioner Scheme (CEnvP) was established in 2004 by the Environment Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ). A Certified Environmental Practitioner is the highest grade of general environmental practice in Australia and New Zealand, and recognises outstanding practical experience and expertise, as well as high ethical standards.

Certification is conferred upon environmental practitioners who successfully fulfil the EIANZ rigorous requirements, which includes an application form, panel interview and subsequent ratification by the CEnvP Board.
