Student Street Activation

Based in Hamilton, Wintec is one of New Zealand’s leading institutes of technology. Over the years, the Rotokauri campus site has been individually developed by various parties, which left vast under-utilised spaces throughout the site.

Wintec’s goal was to improve student engagement between these spaces, as well as refine the strong sense of character and place.

Boffa Miskell was engaged to lead the initial design meetings, providing landscape design from an initial sketch stage through to detail design, and site observation. The design successfully integrates existing features and new developments, improving campus spatial legibility and coherence, and creating unique destination areas with their own character and identity.

The key features of this project are the configuration of furniture elements creating a series of collaboration and private spaces for students to occupy. This was a key criteria of the project scope and promotes diverse engagement.

This multi-zoned project complements the activity spectrum throughout the site, activating the linear student street, as well as providing pedestrian routes and encompasses bold palettes.
