The design narrative and material palette references ideas of compassion and community.

Boffa Miskell were commissioned as lead design consultant to upgrade the next stage of Federal Street, between Wellesley Street and Mayoral Drive. This stage being one part of a four stage Federal Street project from Mayoral Drive to Fanshawe Street.

The project aspires to deliver a high-quality, safe, and durable shared space environment that promotes and prioritises pedestrian movements and public life as part of the proposed City Centre laneway circuit.

Native trees line the street to provide shelter and connect local habitats while runoff from the street is treated through vegetated raingardens. The pre-settlement valley slope that the street now occupies is recognised through the Mayoral Drive embankment slope.

Working alongside Mana Whenua, the concept of Te Ao Hurihuri was developed for the project to connect the street with the recently completed Mission HomeGround building. Te Ao Hurihuri – the journey through the everchanging world, refers to the potential within all of us in our search for enlightenment and excellence.

Crushed shell has been included outside the Mission HomeGround building to provide a sense of safety to those in the building – akin to the traditional use of crushed shell around pa sites to warn of intruders through the night. Reclaimed basalt kerbs from the street are re-used in the form of Poutama signifying the pursuit of excellence while meeting and gathering places are provided to foster social potential.
