High Street is a cherished part of Auckland’s city centre, known for its rich urban history, intimate streetscape, and distinctive character. Having undergone numerous transformations over time, the current upgrade represents a pivotal moment in its evolution. Integrating CPTED principles will enhance perceptions of safety, foster inclusive use, and reinforce the street’s role as a dynamic and welcoming urban environment.
The assessment revealed that, despite objectively low crime rates and minimal risks to personal safety, there was a prevailing perception among the public that the area is unsafe. To address this disconnect, recommendations focused on fostering community cohesion and reducing social stigma through inclusive design and activation strategies. Spatial interventions were proposed to mitigate conflict points within the constrained street layout, ensuring safer and more intuitive movement for all users.

These findings have directly informed the streetscape concept, providing a robust, evidence-based foundation for design decisions.
