Strengthening connectivity, access, and community presence within an inclusive and revitalised park landscape

Hinemoa Park is strategically located between FMG Stadium Waikato and Seddon Park, forming part of Hamilton’s West Town Belt and occupying an important role within the broader open space network. A key challenge for the project was improving access and permeability through the park, particularly during major sporting events, while supporting its evolving function as a welcoming, everyday community destination.

A central component of Boffa Miskell's response to the brief was the integration of the new K’aute Pasifika Hub into the park landscape. The surrounding open spaces were carefully designed to support the Hub as a community focal point, reinforcing the aspirations of the Pan Pasifika Project while remaining legible, intuitive, and accessible within the wider park context. The landscape framework ensures the Hub is both embedded within its setting, and clearly connected to surrounding activity.

Key landscape design drivers included strengthening connections to adjacent neighbourhoods, improving pedestrian permeability through the park, and increasing visibility and sightlines to enhance safety and ease of movement. New footpath connections extending south along the West Town Belt significantly improve access through the site, particularly on game days when pedestrian volumes are at their highest, and help to balance large‑scale event movement with day‑to‑day use.

Expanded planting around the tennis courts helps define activity zones, soften built elements, and introduce seasonal variation, contributing to overall park amenity and character. Break‑out spaces extending from the Hub provide new opportunities for seating, shade, and informal gatherings, creating flexible spaces that support social interaction, relaxation, and everyday use. Boffa Miskell's detailed design documentation was developed using Revit to support a coordinated and robust design outcome.

The completed project successfully embeds the K’aute Pasifika Hub within its park setting, strengthens connections through Hinemoa Park, and reinforces its role as a connected, inclusive public space within Hamilton’s West Town Belt.
