Boffa Miskell led the landscape and urban design, integrating multiple infrastructure upgrades, including stormwater separation, power‑line undergrounding, road raising and carriageway rehabilitation, into a cohesive public‑realm outcome. Our work also addressed significant site constraints, such as designing tree pits compatible with the risks and conditions associated with the Meola Reef closed landfill.
To support consultation and stakeholder engagement, Boffa Miskell prepared visual simulations, artist impressions, public maps, plans and storyboards that helped Auckland Transport clearly communicate design outcomes and construction impacts. We also attended consultations with local businesses and community groups to ensure the design responded to their needs and opportunities.
Collaboration with the engineering team ensured transport, landscape, infrastructure and urban‑realm considerations were fully integrated. This process supported high‑quality design outcomes and an improved experience for residents, cyclists and pedestrians along the upgraded corridor.
A key design priority was strengthening the green character of the corridor through the retention of mature street trees and introducing new canopy planting. Boffa Miskell undertook detailed alignment testing and service investigations to minimise tree loss within the constrained road corridor.
To support long‑term tree health and increase soil volumes, we integrated the Stockholm Structural Soil tree‑pit system across the project, a first‑time trial in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland. These pits also enable passive irrigation using stormwater runoff, providing a valuable test case for future projects.
What began as a simple cycleway project evolved into a comprehensive corridor upgrade improving safety, resilience, and amenity for all users. Through coordinated design, community engagement, and infrastructure integration, the project has delivered a future‑ready streetscape that enhances transport choice, supports local centres, and strengthens the green character of Auckland’s inner west.
