The framework enabled Meridian to measure and track nature-based performance across its operations, helping the organisation understand its environmental impacts and dependencies while monitoring the effectiveness of nature-based actions and partnerships over time.
Structured to align with the requirements of the Dow Jones Best-in-Class World Index and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), the framework also incorporated the Environmental Institute of Australia and New Zealand (EIANZ) Ecological Impact Assessment Guidelines. This ensured assessments reflected current ecological best-practice and aligned with New Zealand policy and environmental assessment standards.
Using evidence from Assessment of Environmental Effects reports, consent compliance reporting and operational site knowledge, Boffa Miskell evaluated nature-related impacts and dependencies across Meridian’s operational wind and solar farms and carbon forest sites. Where appropriate, biodiversity outcomes were assessed against no net-loss and net-positive impact targets, providing a robust and transparent measure of environmental performance.
The resulting framework has strengthened Meridian’s ability to evaluate biodiversity outcomes, support sustainability reporting and respond to increasingly rigorous environmental disclosure requirements. The work also contributed to Meridian achieving its highest-ever score in the 2026 Dow Jones Best-in-Class assessment.
